Climbing Facts & History
San Jacinto Peak: Where the Desert Meets the Mountains
Rising 3,302 metres (10,834 feet) above Southern California, San Jacinto Peak is one of the most prominent mountains in the United States. Located within Mount San Jacinto State Park, it offers a striking contrast between the desert landscape of Palm Springs and the rugged alpine terrain above.
The mountain is particularly known for its dramatic northern escarpment, rising over 2,400 metres above San Gorgonio Pass.
For hikers, San Jacinto offers several routes, from trails accessible via the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the demanding Cactus to Clouds Trail, which climbs approximately 3,300 metres from the desert floor to the summit. Its landscape, elevation and challenging terrain make San Jacinto a remarkable destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking everything from scenic mountain hikes to strenuous high-altitude adventures.

Solar Eclipse: A New 900-Metre Route on Eiger’s North Face
Climbers Roger Schaeli and Fay Manners have established Solar Eclipse, a new 900-metre route on the legendary north face of the Eiger in Switzerland.
Completed over 18 days, including 13 spent living on the wall, the route spans 33 pitches of previously unclimbed terrain, combining traditional and bolted climbing.
The pair spent their days climbing, drilling, cleaning and hauling supplies, with nights spent suspended on portaledges. One particularly memorable moment came when they witnessed a solar eclipse from high on the face, watching the mountain briefly disappear into darkness.
While the route has been established from bottom to top, the climbers plan to return in spring to work towards a free ascent.
For Schaeli, who has established several routes on the Eiger, Solar Eclipse adds another remarkable chapter to his history on one of the Alps’ most iconic walls.

Will Gadd: Redefining the Limits of Adventure
The man who took ice climbing to Niagara Falls. Canadian adventurer Will Gadd has built a remarkable career pushing the boundaries of ice climbing, mixed climbing, and paragliding.
In January 2015, he made history by becoming the first reported person to scale the ice-covered rock wall beside Niagara Falls' iconic Horseshoe Falls, followed by fellow climber Sarah Hueniken. The extraordinary ascent brought him close enough to the rushing water to reach out with his ice tool.
His achievements extend far beyond climbing. Gadd previously held the paragliding world distance record with an impressive 423 km flight in Zapata, Texas. He also hosted the documentary series Fearless Planet, exploring some of Earth's most challenging environments alongside scientists.
From frozen waterfalls to open skies, Gadd's journey reflects a relentless pursuit of adventure, technical excellence, and the courage to explore the extraordinary.
A reminder that the greatest adventures begin where conventional limits end.

Türkiye Mountaineering Federation: Building a Stronger Climbing Community
Mountaineering is about more than reaching the summit. It takes preparation, technical knowledge, teamwork, and respect for the mountains.
The Türkiye Mountaineering Federation (TDF) supports a wide range of mountain sports, including mountaineering, sport climbing, ice climbing, ski mountaineering, paraclimbing and canyoning. Through training programmes, club activities, competitions and technical development, it helps strengthen the climbing community and promote safer participation in the outdoors.
Its work also highlights an important part of climbing culture: progress depends on both individual skill and collective responsibility. Developing trained athletes, qualified officials and experienced mountaineers helps create a stronger foundation for the sport.
For anyone passionate about climbing, the federation offers a glimpse into the wider ecosystem behind every successful ascent, from structured training and route information to organised mountain activities. Because every summit begins long before the first move on the rock.
