Mount Karisimbi: The Snow-Capped Giant of the Virunga Range
Mount Karisimbi is a dormant stratovolcano located in the Virunga Mountains, on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rising to about 4,507 meters (14,787 feet), it is the highest volcano in the range and among the tallest mountains in Africa.
Karisimbi forms part of the Albertine Rift, a section of the western branch of the East African Rift system. It is surrounded by other notable volcanoes such as Mikeno, Bisoke, and Nyiragongo, making the region one of the most geologically active in the world. The mountain’s name comes from the local word amasimbi, meaning “snow” or “white shell,” referencing the frost and occasional snow seen near its summit.
Between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke lies the famous Karisoke Research Center, established to study and protect endangered mountain gorillas. Known for its challenging terrain, harsh weather, and rich biodiversity, Mount Karisimbi stands as a powerful symbol of East Africa’s volcanic heritage and ongoing conservation efforts.

American rock-climbing icon Alex Honnold has pulled off another jaw-dropping feat, this time far from natural rock faces. He free-solo climbed Taipei 101, one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, without ropes, harnesses, or safety gear.
Rising over 500 metres above the city, the building’s exterior offered no margin for error. The climb demanded absolute precision, stamina, and mental control, especially given the smooth surfaces, exposure, and urban unpredictability. Honnold completed the ascent in just over an hour, astonishing spectators watching from the ground and millions following the live broadcast.
