Climbing Facts & History
Cerro Chirripó – Costa Rica’s Roof

Article content

Standing at 3,821 metres (12,536 ft), Cerro Chirripó is the highest peak in Costa Rica and the crown of the Talamanca Mountain Range. Located within Chirripó National Park, it offers one of the country’s most spectacular hiking experiences.

On clear days, visitors can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the summit, a rare sight made possible by the mountain’s remarkable elevation and prominence.

The park is home to diverse ecosystems, ranging from lush cloud forests to the unique high-altitude páramo, supporting rich biodiversity including orchids, hummingbirds, quetzals, and even jaguars.

The mountain’s name, meaning “Land of Eternal Waters,” reflects the many streams and glacial lakes formed after the last Ice Age. Reaching the summit requires a challenging 19.5-kilometre hike and a park permit, but the breathtaking landscapes make the effort worthwhile.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast or an avid trekker, Cerro Chirripó is an unforgettable destination that showcases the incredible beauty and ecological diversity of Costa Rica.
