Climbing Facts & History
Mount Shasta: The Majestic Giant of Northern California

Mount Shasta is a towering stratovolcano in northern California’s Cascade Range, rising to about 14,179 ft (4,322 m), making it one of the highest peaks in the region. The mountain’s massive, snow-covered cone dominates the landscape and has an estimated volume greater than any other volcano in the Cascade Arc. It lies within the Shasta–Trinity National Forest and is visible from miles around.
Geologically, Shasta formed through multiple volcanic events over hundreds of thousands of years, creating overlapping cones including the prominent satellite peak Shastina. Although currently dormant, it is considered potentially active, with the last eruption occurring centuries ago. Layers of lava and ash from past eruptions give the mountain its characteristic structure, and seven named glaciers cling to its upper slopes.
Mount Shasta has long attracted climbers, skiers, and nature lovers. It holds cultural significance for local Native American tribes and has inspired myths and legends. The first recorded ascent was in the 1850s, and today it remains a popular outdoor destination, blending natural grandeur with geological intrigue.

Jakob Schubert Repeats Shaolin (9A) at Red Rocks
Austrian climbing legend Jakob Schubert has added another milestone to his bouldering résumé by repeating Shaolin (graded 9A/V17) at Red Rocks, Nevada. This marks his third confirmed 9A boulder, following Alphane and Mount Doom. Unlike his earlier long, sustained problems, Shaolin is short and explosively powerful, featuring two brutally hard sequences that demand peak strength and precision.
First established by Sean Bailey, Shaolin sits beside the classic Trieste and has quickly become one of the world’s most coveted challenges. Schubert praised its aesthetic line, perfect landing and iconic moves especially the dynamic foot jump and thin edge sequence that define the crux.
The project wasn’t without struggle: Schubert battled skin tears and even had to reset sequences after a small hold broke. After several tough sessions, he completed the problem on the penultimate day of his Red Rocks trip, celebrating the ascent with joy and disbelief. This send underscores Schubert’s enduring excellence across disciplines and a strong start to the new climbing year.
