Climbing Facts & History

Cho Oyu: Gateway to the Eight-Thousanders

Cho Oyu

At 8,188 meters, Cho Oyu is the sixth-highest mountain in the world, straddling the Nepal–Tibet border in the Himalayas. Its name means “Turquoise Goddess” in Tibetan, reflecting the mountain’s striking appearance at sunset. Just 20 km west of Everest, Cho Oyu offers climbers a comparatively less technical ascent, making it a popular choice for those attempting their first 8,000-meter peak. The first successful climb was in 1954 by an Austrian team, marking the beginning of its reputation as the “easiest” of the 14 eight-thousanders. But while Cho Oyu may be more accessible, it remains a formidable challenge demanding high-altitude endurance, glacier navigation, and weather-readiness. It continues to serve as a training ground for Everest aspirants and a cherished goal for serious mountaineers.

Hamish McArthur Sends V17 in a Single Session

Hamish Mcarthur

British climber Hamish McArthur achieved a remarkable feat by completing the second ascent of “No One Mourns The Wicked” (V17/9A) at Thunder Ridge, Colorado, in a single session. This challenging problem, established by Nathaniel Coleman in 2024, extends Daniel Woods’ “Defying Gravity” (8C) with a demanding low start. McArthur first sent “Defying Gravity” within an hour, then tackled the full line, completing it at 2:47 PM. This marks McArthur’s second V17 ascent, following his success on “Megatron” in April. Reflecting on his achievement, he emphasized the deep preparation behind such milestones, stating, “I just want to keep surprising myself forever.”
