Climbing was officially included in the Summer Olympics in 2020
Sport climbing made its historic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the climbing community. The competition featured a combined format, integrating three disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing. Athletes’ performances across these events were aggregated to determine the final standings. In the men’s combined event, Spain’s Alberto Ginés López clinched the gold medal, while Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret secured gold in the women’s combined event. Their victories not only highlighted individual excellence but also showcased the global reach and diversity of the sport. The inclusion of climbing in the Olympics has elevated the sport’s profile, inspiring a new generation of climbers and expanding its audience worldwide.

Benjamin Védrines Completes Solo Winter Ascent of the Petit Dru
French alpinist Benjamin Védrines has achieved a daring solo winter ascent of the North Face of the Petit Dru (3,733m) in the Mont Blanc massif. He completed the climb in an astounding 8 hours and 45 minutes, following the historic Pierre-Alain route.
Battling temperatures of -20°C, Védrines described the climb as intense, committing, and deeply fulfilling. His achievement adds to a legacy of elite solo winter ascents on this notorious granite peak.
This marks another milestone in Védrines’ remarkable career, solidifying his place among the world’s top alpinists.

French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME)
The French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME) governs climbing, mountaineering, and related sports in France. Established in 1985, it promotes climbing, ice climbing, ski touring, and snowshoe hiking. The FFME organizes national competitions, trains instructors, and manages climbing sites. It also represents France in international bodies like the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).
Recognized by the French Ministry of Sports, the FFME supports climbing’s Olympic inclusion and oversees safety regulations. It collaborates with local clubs to develop infrastructure and training programs. With a strong focus on youth participation and environmental conservation, the federation plays a key role in the sport’s growth.
