Pikes Peak: America’s Mountain in the Rockies
Pikes Peak stands proudly in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, just west of Colorado Springs. Rising to an elevation of 14,115 feet (4,302 meters), it is one of Colorado’s famous “fourteeners” and among the most iconic mountains in the United States.
The mountain is named after explorer Zebulon Pike, who first sighted it in 1806 but was unable to reach the summit. Over time, Pikes Peak became a powerful symbol of westward exploration and adventure, inspiring the famous phrase “Pikes Peak or Bust” during the Colorado Gold Rush.
Pikes Peak is often called “America’s Mountain” because its sweeping views inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write the poem that became the patriotic song America the Beautiful. Today, visitors can reach the summit by hiking the challenging Barr Trail, driving the scenic Pikes Peak Highway, or riding the historic Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
The mountain also hosts the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, one of the world’s most demanding automobile races. Pikes Peak remains a breathtaking destination that blends natural beauty, history, and adventure.

Yannick Flohé Repeats No One Mourns the Wicked
German climber Yannick Flohé has added another landmark ascent to his already impressive résumé by repeating No One Mourns the Wicked at Thunder Ridge. Originally established by Nathaniel Coleman in 2024, the boulder was proposed at the elite grade of 9A (V17), making it one of the hardest problems in the world.
Flohé completed the line after seven sessions during an unplanned trip to Colorado. What began as a backup destination due to a heat wave in Red Rocks quickly turned into one of the standout ascents of the season. After topping the route, Flohé suggested the problem may be better suited to 8C+ (V16), reigniting discussion about how cutting-edge boulders are graded.
The ascent further highlights Flohé’s extraordinary versatility. Over the past year, he became the first climber to flash an 8C (V15) boulder and also repeated some of the world’s hardest sport routes.
Beyond the numbers, Flohé described No One Mourns the Wicked as “one of the best boulders in the world.” His repeat reminds us that in climbing, the quality of the experience often matters more than the grade attached to it
