Climbing Facts & History

Cerro Torre: Patagonia’s Tower of Challenge

Cerro Torre

Cerro Torre, standing at 3,128 meters in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, is one of the world’s most striking and formidable peaks. Its needle-like granite spire, crowned with a cap of rime ice, makes it both visually spectacular and technically treacherous. Fierce winds, freezing temperatures, and unstable ice formations have long tested even the most experienced climbers.

The mountain’s first undisputed ascent was achieved in 1974 by an Italian team after years of controversy surrounding earlier claims. Today, Cerro Torre is a coveted destination for mountaineers and high-altitude hikers seeking to witness its grandeur. The approach trek through Los Glaciares National Park offers breathtaking views of glaciers, turquoise lakes, and neighboring Mount Fitz Roy making it one of Patagonia’s most rewarding hikes for adventurers who crave both beauty and challenge.

Katherine Choong Conquers Tarragó: A Landmark First for Women in Montserrat

Katherine Choong

Swiss climber Katherine Choong has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing the first female ascent of Tarragó (240m, 6b, 8b, 8a, 8b+, 7c+/8a) on Montserrat’s towering conglomerate walls in Catalonia. Known for its exposed and technical pitches, Tarragó demands strength, precision, and an unyielding mindset qualities Choong demonstrated throughout the climb.

What began as an optimistic attempt turned into a true test of resilience. The rock quality proved unpredictable, weather conditions shifted rapidly, and during her ascent, a crucial hold broke off on the crux pitch. Yet, instead of retreating, Choong adapted, crafted a new sequence, and persevered to the summit.

Her successful ascent not only highlights her technical mastery but also marks a symbolic victory for women in big-wall climbing showing that determination can redefine boundaries on the steepest faces.

Beth Rodden: Redefining the Limits of Climbing

Beth Rodden

Beth Rodden, born in 1980, is one of America’s most influential rock climbers, known for her fearless approach to traditional routes. She began climbing at just 15, quickly excelling in competitions before shifting her focus to big wall and trad climbing where strength, precision, and mental endurance define success.

Her journey hasn’t been without hardship. In 2000, while on an expedition in Kyrgyzstan, she and three others were kidnapped by rebels and held hostage for six days before making a daring escape. Despite the trauma, Rodden returned stronger, continuing to set new benchmarks in the climbing world.

In 2008, she completed the first free ascent of Meltdown in Yosemite—a climb still regarded as one of the hardest traditional crack routes on earth. Beyond her climbs, Rodden has become an advocate for body positivity and mental health, challenging the climbing community’s obsession with weight and perfection.
