The Matterhorn of the Rockies: Mount Assiniboine’s Untamed Majesty

The Matterhorn

Mount Assiniboine, rising to 3,618 meters, is the crown jewel of the Canadian Rockies. Often called the “Matterhorn of the Rockies” for its sharp, pyramidal silhouette, it straddles the Continental Divide between British Columbia and Alberta. What sets it apart? Its remoteness. The mountain is accessible only by a 27 km hike or helicopter, adding a sense of pilgrimage to any visit. First climbed in 1901, Assiniboine offers no easy routes, just raw, alpine wilderness.

Set within both Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park and Banff National Park, its dramatic peak towers above Lake Magog, drawing photographers, climbers, and solitude-seekers alike. Named by geologist George Dawson after the Assiniboine people, the cloud plume at its summit once resembled smoke from a tipi. Assiniboine is not just a climb, it’s a journey into Canada’s wild heart.

Seb Bouin Conquers Croatia’s Hardest Climb: Vidra La Vida (9b/+)

Seb Bouin

French climber Seb Bouin has completed the first ascent of Vidra La Vida (9b/+) on Croatia’s Hvar island, now the country’s hardest sport route. The spectacular line starts with an 8c+/9a pitch and leads into a powerful roof sequence with a 360° spin crux. Bouin discovered and bolted the line in early May, returning within weeks to complete it. Despite intense heat and near burnout, a change in wind conditions helped him push through.

He described the route as “where difficulty meets beauty,” and credited the Hvar climbing community for their support. With this ascent, Bouin not only leaves his mark on Croatian rock but also raises the bar for sport climbing in the region.
