Climbing Facts & History

Drakensberg: Where Nature and History Rise Together/b>

Drakensberg

The Drakensberg, also called uKhahlamba or the “Barrier of Spears,” is Southern Africa’s most iconic mountain range, stretching over 1,000 kilometers across South Africa and Lesotho. Towering cliffs, deep valleys, and rolling grasslands define its dramatic landscape. Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest peak in Africa south of Kilimanjaro, stands at 3,482 meters. The range supports rich biodiversity, including rare and endemic species like the Drakensberg rockjumper. Tugela Falls, plunging nearly 950 meters, is one of the world’s tallest waterfalls.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Drakensberg is a living archive of human history, home to thousands of ancient San rock paintings found in hidden caves. This blend of ecological and cultural significance has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park. Today, it remains a haven for hikers, conservationists, and those seeking a deep connection to both land and legacy.
