Climbing Facts & History
Exploring the Iconic Matterhorn: A Symbol of Alpine Adventure and Natural Wonder
The Matterhorn, one of the highest mountains in the Alps, straddles the Swiss-Italian border near Zermatt, Switzerland. Known for its iconic, near-symmetrical pyramid shape, it reaches a height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet). The mountain’s steep faces and sharp ridges make it a challenging climb, with its first successful ascent occurring in 1865. However, this climb was marred by tragedy as four of the seven climbers died during the descent. The Matterhorn is also famous for its geological history, revealing rock layers formed from Africa’s continental crust, making it a site of scientific fascination. Today, it’s a major tourist attraction, drawing mountaineers and hikers to admire its grandeur and beauty. The mountain is symbolic of the Swiss Alps and stands as a testament to the adventurous spirit of climbers worldwide.
